architecture in art, art with Rochester connections, by Rochester artists, from Rochester collections
Painting
American-born painter Colin Campbell Cooper infused life into his paintings with an impressionist’s sense of air and light. After training in Philadelphia and Paris, he married fellow-artist and Rochester native Emma Lampert and the couple travelled around Europe and much of the world. Cooper painted subjects ranging from the Taj Mahal in India to the Main Street Bridge in Rochester, and was represented in MAG’s inaugural exhibition in 1913.

Long celebrated as our city’s founder, Nathaniel Rochester (1752–1831) was recently discovered to have bought and sold enslaved people while he lived in Maryland. Not only did Rochester buy and sell enslaved people in the South as a business venture, he continued to own and profit from the labor of enslaved individuals after moving north. In fact, he did so until New York State law made it impossible for him to continue in 1827. This information makes evident how insidious and enmeshed slavery was in the business life of the early nineteenth century, even in the northern states.
Many decades before Kodak gave us the snapshot, a portrait such as this one was a way for a privileged, white person of this period to capture their likeness for posterity. In comparison, the enslaved Black men, women, and children of Rochester’s household did not have their portraits painted. Their names, likenesses, and personal stories went largely unrecorded and most have not survived history—another example of the dehumanization of enslaved individuals during this period of American history.

Painting
Maxfield Parrish, leading illustrator and muralist of the early twentieth century, painted Interlude to hang at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester. Through architect Lawrence Grant White, George Eastman commissioned three murals for the theater, which served as both silent movie palace and philharmonic hall. Interlude was Eastman’s favorite, a “peacherina,” he wrote White.
The radiant quality of Interlude is due to Parrish’s high technical standards and theatrical sense of color—electrical reds, vivid purples, and lush apricots. A shade of cobalt straight from the tube was applied so ingeniously that it became known as “Parrish blue.” He painted glaze upon glaze to create a hard photographic finish that betrayed no brush strokes.
Interlude was moved to the Memorial Art Gallery in 1997 to provide it with more stable temperature and humidity conditions. In its place at the Eastman Theatre is a full-size color reproduction.

Douglas Volk was known for his portraiture. This painting of his daughter, Marion, is a nice example of his work.
Volk was the son of Leonard Wells Volk, the sculptor of Life Mask and Hands of Abraham Lincoln (98.37.1-.2a-b) and Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation statuette (2008.29) in the collection of the Memorial Art Gallery. As the child of an artist, Douglas Volk was surrounded by art from an early age. He travelled to Paris as a young man where he studied under the academic painter, Jean-Léon Gérôme. Volk went on to have a long and distinguished career in the United States where he exhibited widely, was the recipient of numerous awards, and taught generations of artists at Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design.

Sculpture
If you approached 50 West Main Street in Rochester late in the 19th century, you would have seen this figure standing in front of the tobacco shop located there. So that no one would miss the point that tobacco products were sold inside, it was purchased to stand outside and advertise the shop’s wares. The carving included stylized tobacco leaves and a tobacco box held in the figure’s outstretched right hand.
Carvers capitalized early on the relationship between Native Americans and the tobacco that they grew for sacred practices. Carvings of Native Americans were used by the 18th century in British tobacco shops, reflecting the growth of the transatlantic trade. With laws restricting sidewalk signs, and the decline of tobacco shops due to public health awareness, the once-ubiquitous cigar store Indian has become a rarity.

Alexander Calder was one of the most important and influential sculptors of the twentieth century. He is best known for his mobiles, kinetic or moving sculptures usually painted in black and the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.
Calder’s sculptures delight people of all ages for their charm, whimsy, and grace. If this mobile, with its rather bulky counter-weight, seems less graceful than some of Calder’s others, it may be because it is one of the earliest of his mobiles made for the outdoors. Created in 1935 of iron rather than the artist’s typical sheet metal, it is a very rare and relatively large early example. Soon after this, Calder would work in metal far less frequently. As the U.S. geared up for the World War II effort, metal became a very scarce material.
This sculpture was given to the Memorial Art Gallery by Charlotte Whitney Allen, who commissioned it in 1934 for her garden on Oliver Street in Rochester.

Lachaise's sculptures captured in permanent form elusive and complex ideals of female beauty. Here, the model's contrapposto stance, in which the weight is off center rather than upright and balanced, is lively and engaging. Additionally, areas of bronze color enliven the fragment's surface.

Charlotte Whitney Allen and her husband hired Pittsford native Fletcher Steele to design a garden for their newly built house on Oliver Street [Rochester, NY] in 1915. The lot was small, ninety by two hundred feet, so Steele had to make use of interesting details to provide visual stimulation. The young landscape architect had strong notions of what would make a small backyard into a charming city oasis, which he enumerated in several articles and even a book, "Design in the Little Garden". Sculpture was one such detail Steele felt was crucial to a small garden, providing it met the proper criteria. He also considered space composition a necessary factor in good garden design. Some of the traits good garden sculpture should possess, according to Steele, include substantial mass, interesting silhouette, strong light and shadow, and contrasting material and color to the foliage around it.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen commissioned the French-born sculptor Gaston Lachaise in 1926 to create a figure for the focal point of their garden. They had first seen his work in an exhibition in New York City in 1918, from which they may have purchased a small sculpture, and possibly even earlier in the 1913 Armory Show. A group of letters housed at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio chronicles the development of their occasionally stormy relationship. After considerable delay, the sculpture was finally installed above the pool in the Oliver Street garden. Alfred Stieglitz, who championed Lachaise, wrote to the Allens in 1927 that "It [the sculpture] has been seen by at least thirty sculptors and their unanimous opinion has been that it is one of the grand bits of work that has come out of America." (Kenyon College Special Collections, Gambier, Ohio, March 26, 1927)

Strength and refinement are communicated simultaneously in this elegant portrait of Hildegarde Lasell Watson. She and her husband, James Sibley Watson, Jr., were important figures in Rochester’s cultural history, and were central to an avant-garde salon of writers, artists and musicians during the first half of the 20th century.
The sculpture is enlivened by Gaston Lachaise’s characteristic use of contrasting surface colors.

Lachaise's friend, James Sibley Watson, Jr., was a member of MAG's founding family. This remarkably talented individual is best known for his editorship of the avant-garde publication "The Dial," where he worked with literary figures like e.e. cummings and Marianne Moore, as well as his early ventures into motion pictures, including the making of "The Fall of the House of Usher." Watson was married to Hildegarde Lasell Watson, who starred in the film and whose portrait sculpture by Lachaise is also owned by the Memorial Art Gallery (67.11).

1800-1900, 19th century, Cupid, from Rochester collections, sculpture
Sculpture
When Rochester businessman and art collector Daniel Powers brought this piece home from the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, it made local headlines. One newspaper article admired its “grace and life-likeness rarely met with in modern composition.” The sculpture was on view at Powers’ own gallery downtown for many years, for an admission charge of $.25. Cantalamessa-Papotti also made a portrait of Powers and the monuments for the families of Rochester nurserymen Ellwanger and Barry, at Mt. Hope and Holy Sepulchre cemeteries.
Interpretations of the figures vary: the Powers Gallery catalogue identified the subject as Cupid giving a girl her first lesson in love by means of a mirror, but the figures may in fact be Cupid with his mother Venus, who is often shown holding a mirror. Mythological and allegorical characters were beloved of academic artists, who could illustrate an abstract quality such as vanity while demonstrating their prowess at depicting the human figure.

1800-1900, 19th century, from Rochester collections, mosques, Orientalism, paintings
Painting
An enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, Gérôme painted dozens of Eastern scenes over his long career, including a number of mosque interiors. Although the mosque seen here has not been identified, the artist was known to have travelled in Asia Minor, the Middle East, and North Africa, and it is believed that this elaborate interior is a composite, made up of details from a number of specific sites. The worshippers assume accurate postures for their devotions, from the initial upright recitation of vows to the final prostration before God.
Gérôme was a firm proponent of the Academic style: he taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and won national honors and the patronage of royalty. Although his pupils had included icons of modernism such as Fernand Leger and Everett Shinn, Gérôme was initially opposed to any challenges to the supremacy of the Academy. In the face of increasing opposition to his conservative viewpoint, he declared that the work of the Impressionists was “insipid and badly executed.”

Painting
About the time this work was painted, Le Sidaner's art was compared by a French critic with the music of his countryman and exact contemporary Claude Debussy. The painting's subtle, almost monochromatic coloring, with daubing brushstrokes creating a soft, flickering play of light over surfaces, is certain reminiscent of Debussy's dappled tonal effects.

Mysterious, beautiful, contemplative—this small ceramic head of a young woman offers few clues as to her origins. While her hairstyle and earrings are typical to Greek art, her thick wreath, representing hundreds of tiny flowers threaded onto a rope of grass, indicates she may be Egyptian. Archeologists have discovered similar wreaths made of real flowers in Egyptian tombs, suggesting this head was made in Egypt after Alexander the Great conquered that land in 332 BCE. The flowers were most likely roses, also believe to have been introduced into Egypt by the Greeks in the 300s BCE.

This ceramic vessel and ornate pair of earrings [28.244] are only two of the over 500 artifacts given to MAG by Rochester businessman C. Herbert Ocumpaugh in 1928, when he donated his entire collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern antiquities to the University of Rochester. Although he was not an archeologist—he had never traveled to these areas of the world—he developed a lifelong fascination with ancient cultures fueled by many visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Aided by archeologists and museum directors, he spent 25 years amassing objects as diverse as iridescent glass, bronze figures of gods and goddesses, and richly-painted Greek ceramics. Ocumpaugh’s donation formed the core of MAG’s ancient collection; today, over 50 objects from this group are included in the exhibits of the Helen H. Berkeley Gallery of Ancient Art on the second floor.

Amulets are small objects that represent gods, goddesses, and symbols of rebirth. Made of bronze, clay, or stone, they offered the wearer sacred protection both in the world of the living and in the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets as jewelry
during life; priests would also place amulets within the wrappings of a mummy as they prepared it for burial. Certain amulets were placed in specific locations on the mummy, such as over the heart, the throat, or the incision on the abdomen.
Amulets of nude dwarfs probably represent Ptah, the god of craftsmen, and were worn by many workers for protection.

This ceramic vessel [28.104] and ornate pair of earrings are only two of the over 500 artifacts given to MAG by Rochester businessman C.

The figure of the ba-bird has a human head on a bird’s body and symbolizes the ba, one of the human spirits that could return to the body after death. Ba-bird amulets were usually placed on the mummy’s chest and, if necessary, could act as a substitute for the ba of the deceased.

The female figure was the most common subject of the clay figures of the Predynastic age. Simple and smooth, the primitive totemic figures were often reduced to lumps of clay with only the female features in detail. Many of these statuettes must have represented the fertility or mother-goddess. Others may have represented loved ones, servants, or dancing women who accompany the deceased to the next life.

Scarabs are amulets and seals carved in the shape of the Egyptian beetle, (Scarabaeus sacer), which was the hieroglyph for "become" or "come into existence." This large scarab contains the name of Amenhotep III, a king of the 18th Dynasty. It also bears the throne name of Thuthmosis III, an earlier king of the New Kingdom, whose scarabs were used as potent talismans centuries after his death.

Glass
Although glass had been produced for millennia in Egypt and the Middle East, the industry developed rapidly during Republican and Imperial Rome. Skilled craftsmen set up workshops throughout the Empire, where they created mass-produced wares for myriad peoples and uses. This small jar, decorated with a menorah and probably used by Jewish pilgrims visiting holy sites in Jerusalem, was created long after the decline of Rome, though using the same advanced techniques developed under skilled Roman glassmakers.

The large Arabic script and the Arabic in the “cloud” shapes are verses from the poet Umar Ibn al-Farid’s Wine Ode, the most famous mystical poem on wine in Arabic. Ibn al-Farid (1181-1235), who studied Islamic mysticism and Arabic literature in Cairo and Mecca, composed poems that generally embrace a view of existence in which creation is lovingly intimate with its divine creator. This richly decorated leaf, made in the 1600s, reflects the continued popularity of al-Farid’s poem.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
, Translated by Emil Homerin. Passage in larger lettering is verses 16-21 of Umar Ibn al-Farid's "al-Khamriyah" or "Wine Ode," the most famous mystical poem on wine in Arabic and Islam. The smaller letters at the right are verses 6-16 of Ibn al-Farid's "Al-Daliyah," "Ode Rhyming in D," a mystical poem. The red text is a Persian version of the poem.

Recreational Artifact
On the night before a Greek girl married, she dedicated her childhood toys and dolls to a goddess, usually Artemis, the chaste goddess of the moon and the hunt. Jointed dolls were common and were made of materials such as wood, terracotta, bone, ivory, marble and alabaster. Their bodies were covered with white or flesh-colored slip (liquid clay) and the hair was painted red or yellow.

Sculpture
Syria and Palestine (Canaan) were the crossroads of the ancient world. Local artists borrowed and adapted the cultural influences of traders and traveling craftsmen, and created a composite decorative art style of great individuality. This figure, which might represent the Canaanite goddess Astarte, has thick curly hair suggestive of the wigs worn by the Egyptians.

Terra cotta figurines for religious functions were mass-produced along the Syrian-Phoenician coast. Perhaps this is a representation of one of the Canaanite goddesses, such as Asherah, Astarte, or Anat.
