American art, George Eastman Collection, paintings, seascapes
Painting
In 1915, Memorial Art Gallery mounted an exhibition of seascapes by a leading American marine painter of the time, Paul Dougherty. After the show was already open to the public, the artist sent an additional canvas, Coast of Cornwall, Near St. Ives, which he considered his best work to date. George Eastman had expressed interest in purchasing a Dougherty for the MAG collection. This painting was a top contender but several members of the Art Committee requested director George Herdle to ask the artist to rework the foreground. Reluctantly, Herdle complied and the mystified Dougherty politely asked him exactly what he would like done. In the meantime, Herdle sought the opinion of painter Elmer Schofield, who “thought the criticism not well made.” The director quickly assured Dougherty that all was well, overrode the Committee’s objections, and acquired this painting with funds donated by Eastman.

For George Inness, an adherent of the mystical Swedenborgian faith, landscape elements and colors had specific symbolic qualities. For example, he wrote that the moon is a ‘natural emblem of faith,’ reassuring the faithful that divine light still exists even though it is not directly visible in the night sky. In Inness’s philosophical system, blue is the color of faith.

Joshua Reynolds was the leading portrait painter in 18th-century England, the first president of London’s Royal Academy, and a respected art critic. He frequently modeled his sitters’ poses on those seen in Old Master painting and ancient classical sculpture. Reynolds’ use of rich color, strong lighting, and loose brushwork greatly influenced the next generation of British portraitists, including Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Henry Raeburn.
The young woman in this portrait, Sophia Hoare (c. 1765-1836), was the daughter of Richard Hoare, an heir to the founder of England’s oldest private bank. Sophia’s portrait was commissioned by William Grimston, whom she married in February 1783. Reynolds noted the transaction in his account books: “Miss Hoare, paid by Mr. Grimpstone, £ 78 15s.; a very proper attention on the part of the fiancé.”

A founding member of the Royal Academy, Thomas R. A. Gainsborough was a premier 18th-century English portraitist whose upward trajectory to fame began with a strategic move to Bath, a town with many portrait-commissioning British gentry. This particular portrait captures Bath resident Ann Pigott in her lonely and isolated youth. At 17, she married a much older William Provis and was left alone and childless while he lived at his country estate. As British gentry were selling family art collections in face of financial strain from estate taxes implemented in 1894, newly-wealthy Americans were building art collections. George Eastman acquired this portrait in 1912 in that manner and later bequeathed it to the University of Rochester.[

Having a portrait painted by a noted artist such as John Hoppner was a mark of status; decades later, American collectors still enjoyed the prestige of owning portraits of European gentry. Even into the twentieth century, America was seen as a young country, and newly-wealthy Americans could “borrow” the pedigree that accompanied the sitter by displaying these portraits. Comprehensive estate taxes were introduced in England in 1894, and in the years that followed, families were forced to sell off some of their family holdings, including real estate, household belongings, and works of art, to pay these death duties. At the same time, wealthy American industrialists like George Eastman, who owned this painting and several other British portraits, were building their art collections, and bought family portraits as well as Old Master works as they came on the market.
Little is known of Mrs. Addison; her husband was in the civil service of the East India Company, and they lived in India for much of their married life.

Painting
Raeburn may have made this painting to commemorate General Hay MacDowell’s 1795 departure from the 57th Regiment of Foot, with which he had served for five years. He would go on to be named commander of the British forces in Madras, India.
The low perspective of the life-sized canvas elevates MacDowell to the status of a hero, while the vivid colors provide animation to an otherwise-static pose. The use of these simple devices to create a monumental effect helps to explain why Raeburn, who had no formal training as an artist, was the preeminent portraitist in Scotland in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Henry Raeburn was almost exclusively a painter of portraits. The demand for his work was great enough to sustain a career in Scotland, and his commissions came primarily from the members of high society in and around the growing city of Edinburgh. Raeburn’s portraits are known for their naturalness and sensitivity to the sitter. They often take the form seen here, with a seated three-quarter length figure pictured in a landscape, painted as if seen from below.
This portrait is of a young noblewoman, Mary Johnston, the wife of James Johnston and the daughter of William Baillie, Lord Polkemmet, a Scottish judge whose portrait Raeburn had also painted.

Romney must have been well acquainted with James Clitherow as a young man: he made two portraits of him, as well as a replica, all within a span of a year. Clitherow, who had recently graduated from Oxford at the time this portrait was made, appears thoughtful and composed, demonstrating his erudition by holding a book. Newspaper accounts describe the portrait as having been painted for a price of just over £20.
Romney directs the viewer’s focus by sketching Clitherow’s hands and stock, or neckcloth, only loosely; he concentrates instead on the details of the head, coat, and chair.

This unfinished portrait depicts Eleanor Todd, who became Lady Maitland in 1782 when she married James, Viscount Maitland, eighth Earl of Lauderdale. Although it is not known why the portrait was never completed, at this point in his career, Romney had a large number of unfinished paintings in his studio. Sitters were required to pay half his fee before the painting could commence, but the daunting schedule of sittings and the artist’s demands for specific poses and clothing dissuaded some clients from continuing the professional relationship. Still, the presence of half-finished portraits in the studio served as a sort of showcase, enabling potential subjects to see examples of Romney’s work.

The popularity of seascapes in seventeenth-century Holland reflected the wealth and power engendered by that nation's naval superiority. Although he was primarily a merchant and only an amateur painter, van de Cappelle is generally recognized as among the most proficient artists to specialize in this genre. The subtle color harmonies and quiet serenity of this scene are typical of his accomplishment.

Thaulow spent much time painting in France. This scene probably represents Manéhouville, a village on the Schie River near Dieppe in Normandy. A friend of many of the Impressionists, although he did not experiment with colors of light as they did, Thaulow convinced Claude Monet to visit Norway one winter to paint the snow.

The Flemish artist, Anthony van Dyck, painted this portrait of an Italian nobleman while he was working in Genoa between 1622 and 1625. Supremely talented and precocious, van Dyck enjoyed considerable success in Italy, Flanders, and eventually England, where he was the favorite painter of King Charles I. He painted notable religious and mythological canvases, but remains most famous for his extraordinarily vivid portraits. The name of this sitter, with his graceful pose and penetrating glance, is unknown. He was certainly a wealthy Genoese patrician, however. To convey this to future viewers of his portrait, he donned his richest apparel for the occasion, including a finely crafted suit of armor and his most expensive wide lace collar and cuffs.

Charles Cottet was particularly well known for his landscapes and stormy seascapes of Brittany, where he spent several months a year. The dark tones and strong values of his work belong to the tradition of Realism, an artistic movement that emphasized objective representations of the world based on the impartial observation of contemporary life. He studied and exhibited with artists such as Edouard Vuillard.

Painting
The watercolorist, lithographer, and painter Pieter Stortenbeker created some of the finest work of The Hague School, a movement of Dutch painters who worked around The Hague from about 1860–1900. They were interested in realistic rather than romantic imagery, and their subjects included Dutch scenes of daily life, landscapes, animals, and sea- and cityscapes. Early on, the work of The Hague School artists tended toward an overwhelming gray color, which explains why the movement is sometimes also called the “gray school.”
Stortenbeker was highly regarded during his lifetime. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, received the gold medal of honor at a major exhibition there in 1861, and was made a Knight of the Order of the Oak Crown in Brussels in 1863. His work is found in many museums and private collections, including those of the Dutch royal family.
