Painting
This painting shows a scene at the end of the epic Indian poem, The Ramayana. Rama and Lakshmana have saved Sita and they all fly home on the aerial chariot Pushpaka to see Rama crowned king of Ayodhya. They ride with twenty-three million monkeys and bears who helped them defeat the demon king Ravana. When Ravana asked Brahma to make him indestructible to gods and demons, he underestimated the power of ordinary men and animals, who became his downfall after his abduction of Rama's wife, Sita.

Painting
Krishna is one of the most popular and revered gods in the Hindu religion, worshipped as the eighth avatar, or incarnation, of the god Vishnu. In art, Krishna, which literally means "black" or "dark as a cloud," is usually portrayed with blue-black skin. As a youth, he appears as the divine lover surrounded by adoring gopis, or female cowherds.
Although Krishna's favorite of his many lovers was the beautiful gopi Radha, he was frequently careless of her affections. This image probably refers to a specific episode in their relationship: Radha, jealous of Krishna's attentions to other gopis, refuses to rejoin him in the forest. Krishna in turn makes an impassioned plea to Radha's friend, who intervenes and encourages their reunion.
The cult of Krishna held as a distinctive trait the exploration of divine and human love. In literature and myth, his youthful flirtations with the gopis are interpreted as symbolic of the loving interplay between God and the human soul.

Painting
The form of Shiva represented in this work embodies Shiva's role as the unifier of opposites - life/death, creation/destruction, ascetic/erotic, male/female. Ardhanarishvara, or the Lord Whose Half is Woman, is the primordial androgyne and the true form of creative power - male and female in one.
If you look closely at the figure of Shiva seated under the tree, you will notice that the right half has white skin, wears a yellow dhoti, sits on a tiger skin and carries a trident, while the left half has yellow skin, wears a red sari, and sits on lotus petals. The right side represents the male, with common attributes of Shiva, and the left, the female.
The appearance of Shiva in this form is cause for celebration, illustrated by the elephants playing in the river, acrobats performing various feats, and musicians playing music. Even other gods come to pay tribute: Narayana appears with blue skin offering a lotus, and his vahana or vehicle Garuda, the eagle, offers flower garlands. Brahma, the creator (with four faces), also pays homage.

Painting
This painting portrays the Hindu deity Krishna as a philosopher-prince conversing about religious doctrines with other royals, who are shown on pedestals of descending size according to their rank. Other characters include sages and pilgrims who appear in regular order on a horizontally-oriented rectangular panel. The simplified linear treatment of the figures and the limited color palette of red, green, yellow and black relate this Hindu work to the painting tradition of the Jain religion, which comprised ascetic vows undertaken by both monks and laymen. These paintings feature hieratically-organized figures and text on palm-leaf surfaces that were then gathered into books.

Shiva as the divine ascetic and the embodiment of the creative-destructive force can be identified by many attributes, each having symbolic value. He wears a tiger/leopard skin wrap (he has conquered pride), snakes coil around his hair, neck, and arms (cosmic energy, regeneration), he holds an axe (destruction) and a deer (regeneration, control of man's unsteady mind). His matted hair contains the crescent moon (time), from the top of his head flows the river Ganga (fertility), and he has a third eye in the center of his forehead (wisdom).
Shiva's consort or female half, Parvati, shown in quite elaborate dress, sits next to him as a musician entertains them. The white bull in the lower corner is Nandi, Shiva's vahana or vehicle, who, in India, is often worshiped in Shiva's place.

This work depicts a scene from the epic Indian poem The Ramayana in which a group of animals heads to war with Rama and Lakshmana against the demon king, Ravana. In the story, Brahma, creator of the worlds, offered Ravana a boon in order to stop him from sacrificing himself in his honor. Ravana asked that he could not be killed by any god or demon and went about torturing all that crossed his path. In order to restore peace to the world, Narayana, preserver of the worlds, took the form of Rama, one of his ten earthly incarnations. After Ravana stole Rama's wife Sita, Rama and his brother, Lakshmana, gathered an army of monkeys and bears and defeated Ravana.

A yantra is a ritual, mystical diagram rooted in the beliefs and concepts contained in a number of the Hindu Tantras, or collections of esoteric texts that emphasize the science of the knowledge of interplanetary rhythms and their integral relations with the human organism. Tantric thought is based in the belief that creative energy flow is achieved through the resolution of polar opposites.
The Hastakara Yantra illustrates these concepts through various symbols and signs on the palm of a hand. In this yantra, the dominant symbols are animals, elements of script and swords, which represent prosperity, power and fortune.

A mother goddess of fertility and creation figures prominently in many belief systems. Although this sculpture has long been named Kali, Goddess of Destruction, an identification of this Hindu goddess has not yet been confirmed. She holds on her hip a small child and is accompanied by another. In her left hand is a cup and in her right, possibly a weapon.
Kali is a paradoxical figure: wild and destructive, yet also maternal. One story tells of Kali on the battlefield, dancing and rampaging wildly, drunk on the blood of her victims. In an effort to protect the world from her chaotic energy, her partner Shiva turns into a crying infant; Kali’s maternal impulses prevail and she calms down to soothe and nurse the child in need.

Sculpture
The identity of the three Hindu gods in this sculpture remains a mystery. The most common three-headed sculpture in Hindu art is of Brahma-Shiva-Vishnu. The cobras around the heads are sometimes associated with Brahma, the Creator; Shiva, the Destroyer; and Vishnu, the Preserver. The monkey on the left side of the sculpture could refer to Prince Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu and the protagonist of The Ramayana, one of India's great national epic poems, because an army of monkeys and bears helped him defeat the demon king Ravana. One missing visual element, however, suggests that the sculpture does not contain the god Shiva, who can always be identified by the presence of a third eye.

According to Indian Hinduism, three gods comprise the Trimurti, or sacred trinity: Brahma, the Creator; Shiva, the Destroyer, and Vishnu, the Preserver. In this illustration from an illuminated Hindu manuscript, two of these gods-Shiva on the left and Vishnu on the right-are shown discussing religious or philosophical matters.
In religious art, the identity of most figures can be established by their attributes, or distinctive physical characteristics or objects. Here, Shiva is portrayed as androgynous, pale-skinned, and half nude, which represents his transcendental nature and his embodiment of the union of male and female. His posture shows his status as an ascetic yogi; the tiger skin on which he sits represents his conquest of pride and control over the mind. Seated on a throne to Shiva's right, the preserver god Vishnu has skin "the color of dark clouds." He is traditionally shown with four arms holding sacred and symbolic objects. His front arms signify his activity in the physical world; those in back, his role in the spiritual realm.
