Duvivier received his initial training in Bruges and then moved to Paris, where he assimilated the severe Neoclassical style perfected by Jacques-Louis David. In this early work, Duvivier combined the poses of several antique statues to illustrate an episode recounted in Plutarch's "Life of Mark Anthony." Following Anthony's suicide, a Roman soldier attempts to forestall the Egyptian queen's own death by promising that Octavian Caesar will show her clemency. The subtle, glowing colors, precise attention to detail, and impeccable draughtsmanship presage the artist's occasional work as a miniaturist.

In 18th-century Britain, sterling silver was the “coinage of the realm,” and literally worth its weight. The ownership of silver goods, however, was more than a display of wealth; it was also an expression of a patron’s taste, education, and power. The government recognized the importance of the silversmiths’ trade to the economy, and closely monitored the quality and hierarchy of British artisans through requirements for silver weights and hallmarks. Their wide variety of goods found markets at the royal court, among a growing professional and merchant class, and through expanding international trade.
Quality British silver of this period has long been a favorite of private collectors. The majority of MAG’s collection of continental and English silver comes from the Woodward family, who donated over 70 pieces in the 1950s.

Joshua Reynolds was the leading portrait painter in 18th-century England, the first president of London’s Royal Academy, and a respected art critic. He frequently modeled his sitters’ poses on those seen in Old Master painting and ancient classical sculpture. Reynolds’ use of rich color, strong lighting, and loose brushwork greatly influenced the next generation of British portraitists, including Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Henry Raeburn.
The young woman in this portrait, Sophia Hoare (c. 1765-1836), was the daughter of Richard Hoare, an heir to the founder of England’s oldest private bank. Sophia’s portrait was commissioned by William Grimston, whom she married in February 1783. Reynolds noted the transaction in his account books: “Miss Hoare, paid by Mr. Grimpstone, £ 78 15s.; a very proper attention on the part of the fiancé.”

John Monck was the Master of the Ceremonies in Bath, England, a position that charged him with organizing events, introducing guests and maintaining order in the spa town. Angelica Kauffmann painted this portrait in Italy rather than Monck’s native England, which suggests that he was on a gentleman’s “Grand Tour” of Europe. The Italian painter Pompeo Batoni painted Monck’s portrait in the same year, indicating that he must have spent enough time in Italy for two rounds of sittings.
Although Kauffmann was only 23 years old when she painted Monck’s portrait, she was well into her career, as she had begun painting professionally as a teenager.

Although the name of the sitter is unknown, Gainsborough gives the viewer several clues that help place him in a social context: the gentleman holds a book, indicating he is learned; he leans on a stone pillar, with a pastoral landscape and a river behind him, suggesting he is a landowner.
This portrait, made when Gainsborough was in his mid-20s, is a typical example of his early style.

A founding member of the Royal Academy, Thomas R. A. Gainsborough was a premier 18th-century English portraitist whose upward trajectory to fame began with a strategic move to Bath, a town with many portrait-commissioning British gentry. This particular portrait captures Bath resident Ann Pigott in her lonely and isolated youth. At 17, she married a much older William Provis and was left alone and childless while he lived at his country estate. As British gentry were selling family art collections in face of financial strain from estate taxes implemented in 1894, newly-wealthy Americans were building art collections. George Eastman acquired this portrait in 1912 in that manner and later bequeathed it to the University of Rochester.[

Having a portrait painted by a noted artist such as John Hoppner was a mark of status; decades later, American collectors still enjoyed the prestige of owning portraits of European gentry. Even into the twentieth century, America was seen as a young country, and newly-wealthy Americans could “borrow” the pedigree that accompanied the sitter by displaying these portraits. Comprehensive estate taxes were introduced in England in 1894, and in the years that followed, families were forced to sell off some of their family holdings, including real estate, household belongings, and works of art, to pay these death duties. At the same time, wealthy American industrialists like George Eastman, who owned this painting and several other British portraits, were building their art collections, and bought family portraits as well as Old Master works as they came on the market.
Little is known of Mrs. Addison; her husband was in the civil service of the East India Company, and they lived in India for much of their married life.

The waterfront promenade of the Riva degli Schiavoni, or River of the Slavs, has long been one of the most picturesque and popular in Venice. Paintings by the great Canaletto and his British followers like William James show the bustling of gondolas, sailing boats and barges; the promenade itself is equally lively with travelers, merchants and townspeople actively engaged in both commerce and recreation.

Romney must have been well acquainted with James Clitherow as a young man: he made two portraits of him, as well as a replica, all within a span of a year. Clitherow, who had recently graduated from Oxford at the time this portrait was made, appears thoughtful and composed, demonstrating his erudition by holding a book. Newspaper accounts describe the portrait as having been painted for a price of just over £20.
Romney directs the viewer’s focus by sketching Clitherow’s hands and stock, or neckcloth, only loosely; he concentrates instead on the details of the head, coat, and chair.

This unfinished portrait depicts Eleanor Todd, who became Lady Maitland in 1782 when she married James, Viscount Maitland, eighth Earl of Lauderdale. Although it is not known why the portrait was never completed, at this point in his career, Romney had a large number of unfinished paintings in his studio. Sitters were required to pay half his fee before the painting could commence, but the daunting schedule of sittings and the artist’s demands for specific poses and clothing dissuaded some clients from continuing the professional relationship. Still, the presence of half-finished portraits in the studio served as a sort of showcase, enabling potential subjects to see examples of Romney’s work.

Francis Wheatley was best known for his historical paintings, scenes of daily life, and portraits. He trained at the Royal Academy in London and became the director of the Society of Artists in 1774. Debts and an unfortunate affair with the wife of a colleague led to his abrupt departure from England to Ireland. He returned in 1783, when he began painting illustrations for works by contemporary authors. The success of these “painted illustrations” led to major commissions, including the one for this monumental painting from the print publisher Robert Bowyer.
One of Bowyer’s most ambitious projects was an illustrated edition of David Hume’s "The History of England." It comprised not only a lavish publication, but the creation of a “History Gallery” for the public display of the original paintings. According to Bowyer’s prospectus, the paintings were intended “to rouse the passions, to fire the mind with emulation of heroic deeds, or to inspire it with detestation of criminal actions.”
Wheatley responded to this challenge by depicting the more dramatic version of Richard’s death, in which he was beheaded rather than starved in prison. The theatrical gestures and expressions, lurid coloring, and bold brushwork serve to heighten the violent drama of the events. In the end, the project was a financial disaster; the paintings from the gallery, including Wheatley’s "The Death of Richard II," were sold in a lottery in 1807.

Next to the King, the archbishop of Paris was one of the most powerful men in France, and he surrounded himself with only the finest quality. Rigaud was the leading French portraitist of the early eighteenth century, often painting kings and royal families. His account book reveals that Archbishop Vintimille du Luc paid 3,000 livres (the French currency of the time) for this masterful likeness. The painting documents the archbishop's character and stature. The mild expression admirably suggests the conciliatory nature that made Vintimille du Luc famous for his diplomatic skills. Writing materials close at hand and a vest library in the background allude to his scholarly attainments and his work. His sumptuous attire, the exquisite workmanship of his desk and chair, and the theatrical backdrop of cloth are calculated to impress the viewer with the archbishop's power and wealth.

Painting
Rococo, from the French word rocaille (rockwork or shell), was an 18th century decorative style that reacted against the classical tradition of the Academy and instead stressed color, light, movement, and a frank pleasure in living. The easy flowing brushwork and the luminous colors show the influence of Rubens.
As a rococo painter, François Boucher worked primarily in the service of Madame de Pompadour, mistress to Louis XV. His paintings satisfied the taste of a sophisticated public which was sensitive to the most subtle relations of color and liked pictures hung on the light paneling of even the smallest room.
This intimate painting of "Venus and Cupid," with its sensuously modeled nudes, embodies the French 18th century tendency to transform the Baroque style into one of more delicate elaboration and elegance. An 18th-century engraving, which P. Aveline made after the painting, is inscribed "F. Boucher pinxit."

Painting
The subject of Judith cutting off the head of Holofernes was one of the most popular subjects in Christian art of the 1600s and 1700s. The Old Testament story tells how the heroine Judith went to the camp of Holofernes, the Assyrian general who was besieging her town. She dazzled him with her beauty; after pretending to accept his advances, she beheaded him with his own sword while he was in a drunken stupor.
This painting illustrates the moment when Judith displays the trophy of her victory to the citizens she has rescued. In a Christian context, the story of the Jewish heroine represents the triumph of virtue over evil. During the Counter-Reformation, the subject also became a powerful symbol of the Catholic Church’s triumph over heresy, or dissent from its teachings. Here, Solimena shows Judith as confident that she has served the will of God. The dramatic lighting, gestures and facial expressions of the figures are intended to appeal to the emotions and inspire the faith that motivated Judith.

Falconet, a leading sculptor of the reign of Louis XV, was a director of the royal ceramic works at Sèvres. His main production was the biscuit statuette, which substitutes "soft paste" for the kaolin clay of "true" porcelain. Falconet took advantage of the milky, marble-like surface to create engaging figural groups of pure form and refined rococo detail.
"The Teaching of Love" may be derived from a composition by François Boucher. Falconet has transformed the painter's design into a complex three-dimensional ensemble of delicate beauty that invites the viewer to enjoy it from multiple angles.

Le Prince studied with the rococo painter François Boucher and adopted his master's delicate manner and cool, pastel palette in his early work. Dating from late in his career, however, "The Visit" demonstrates a greater naturalism, reflecting the increasing popularity of seventeenth-century Dutch painting in eighteenth-century France. In this canvas, Le Prince has combined a genre scene with a panoramic landscape to suggest a gracious moment in everyday rural life. The subject of nobles visiting a peasant family would have appealed to the sense of humanity cultivated during the Enlightenment.

A print from the first important marine atlas, American Neptune, presents a scene of British naval vessels sailing near rural Manhattan shores – ostensibly a peaceful and calm moment, but deceptively so, since it would only be a matter of months before resistance to British rule surfaced. The New York that we see through Des Barres’s eyes is over two centuries and a national history removed from Rhonda Schaller’s memento mori for the destruction of the World Trade Center, but contained in both works is the kernel of political struggle and tragic loss of life.

18th century, 19th century, Bacchante, paintings, women
Painting
The woman in this painting appears as a Bacchante—a female follower of Bacchus, the god of wine and mystical ecstasy. The cluster of grape leaves symbolize wine; her disheveled hair, scanty dress, and enticing gaze suggest the decadence of Bacchanalian festivals.
During the 1700s, artists frequently portrayed their patrons as figures from classical mythology. Portraits of women in the guise of Bacchantes were also a popular theme for other leading portraitists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and George Romney. This is possibly a portrait of Emma, Lady Hamilton, the infamous mistress of Lord Nelson. She was known as a performer of “attitudes,” or theatrical poses of Greek mythological and historical characters.

The history of European stained glass in American museums is by its nature a history of fragments, as these works are completely removed from their architectural context. Determining their date and nationality is further complicated by the popularity that stained glass enjoyed in the post-Renaissance period as well as the disastrous impact of revolution and on the windows of European homes and churches.
The painted panels with classical figures [42.33.1-3] were never intended to represent medieval or Renaissance glass, as were those on the previous page; the figural style suggests an origin in the 1800s.
