Dr. Caligari is among a series of thirteen clocks that Wendell Castle created in the 1980s. He made them at the suggestion of his dealer, who urged him to create a body of work that would challenge the critics’ association of Castle with functional furniture. Castle was particularly interested in the concept of time, and Dr. Caligari is a fanciful exploration of time travel. Its tall case is rich with connections to traditional grandfather clocks. It suggests either a trip to the past in an ancient obelisk, or to the future, in a rocket ship.
The title of the work was inspired by the angular set design of the 1920 German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The clock’s painted interior was intended to suggest the silent horror film’s unsettling mood. Castle and his longtime associate Don Sottile developed a smearing technique using India ink over gesso that gave the painted finish its distinctive feathered edges.

Alchemy Symphony is an apt metaphor to describe the processes used by glass artist Michael Taylor to transform a sand-based material into a harmonic, translucent, and intricately structured work of art.
Taylor is one of America’s premier studio glass artists. He has been affiliated with Rochester Institute of Technology’s outstanding School for American Crafts for a number of years, where he was formerly a professor and head of the Glass Department. His work has been exhibited internationally and is found in many public and private collections, including the White House, the High Museum in Atlanta, and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery.

In 1909 Claude Bragdon received the commission for the New York Central Railroad Station in Rochester. Inspired by Louis Sullivan’s mantra, “form follows function,” Bragdon’s design for the exterior of the building was based on the wheels of a locomotive. The interior design incorporated geometric shapes with a freestyle treatment of a variety of historic styles. The New York Central Railroad Station, completed in 1913, was to be demolished in 1965. All that remains are the artist’s renderings, photographs, and tiles salvaged from the interior.

Frans Wildenhain was a distinguished professor of ceramics at Rochester Institute of Technology. In this beautiful piece, he alludes to the classical myth of Daphne, who was pursued by the god Apollo. She appealed for help and was turned into a laurel tree. Wildenhain expresses the transformation by the gradual plainness of the body of the pot turning into stylized, glazed vegetative forms.

Since the 1960s, Chihuly has been producing innovative forms in glass, and expanding the scale of his work to include entire glass installations. His work incorporates a lifelong pursuit of organic and asymmetrical forms such as the Basket series, inspired by the Northwest Coast Indian baskets. Chihuly's influence on the world of American craft is enduring. Founder of the glass department at the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington state, he represents the best and most creative glassmaking of our time.

Glass
A river, the traditional symbol of the voyage between life and death, wends its way to the mountains in this beautiful window. Sunset Scene was one of a number of windows created by Tiffany Studios for Mount Hope Cemetery. It was commissioned by Thomas B. Dunn, a business and community leader who, after making his fortune from the licorice-flavored mouth freshener, Sen Sen, served as State Treasurer and Congressman.
Such an elegant memorial window, installed in a diminutive classical temple, speaks to the high social and economic standing of the deceased. For its long-term protection, the window was removed from its original cemetery location near the corner of Fifth Avenue and Grove Avenue and donated by the Dunn family to the Memorial Art Gallery.

Metalwork
Karl Kipp worked in the Roycroft community, first in the bookbindery and then in the copper shop. By 1910, he was head of the copper shop. The design of this vase was heavily influenced by the Wiener Werkstette style - simple shape, minimal design, and geometric patterning. The Roycroft "R" is incorporated into the applied silver motif on the front of the vase.

Since the 1960s, Dale Chihuly has been producing innovative forms in glass, teaching, and expanding the scale and scope of his work to include entire glass installations. He began the Seaforms series in the 1980s and continued through the 1990s, inspired by the movement and color of underwater creatures. Chihuly’s Seaforms delight the eye and mystify the brain with their simultaneous delicacy and power. The ribbed pieces shimmer and almost seem to move in the light.
Chihuly’s influence on the world of American craft has been remarkable and enduring. Founder of the glass department at the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the Pilchuck School of Glass in Washington State, he represents the best and most creative glassmaking of our time.

Wayne Higby, head of the ceramics department at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, is one of America’s preeminent ceramists. His works are small-scale abstract landscapes, incorporating colors and forms derived from the natural world. Influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition, Higby uses a raku firing technique wherein glazed pieces are removed from the kiln while still hot and placed to cool in combustible materials like leaves or straw. This typically results in gray or black areas, lustrous colors, and a crackled surface. Turquoise Bay Winter is one of a series of “landscape bowls” that the artist created in the 1980s and 1990s.

Many of Rochester's distinguished and internationally-known ceramists are represented in the Memorial Art Gallery's permanent collection. Recently, the Gallery acquired this signature piece by Rochester Institute of Technology professor Stephen Merritt. Its perfectly balanced form appears to hover in space, complemented by the blue glaze's emergence from the rich blackness. The artist's work expresses an Eastern aesthetic that was absorbed during years of study in Japan and continued interest in the traditions of Asian ceramics.
[Gallery label text]
Born in Rochester, New York, Stephen Merritt studied in Japan and taught at Rochester Institute of Technology. “My work has sought to capture what my teachers – and, I believe, all great potters – have sought: the elemental nature of clay and the classic beauty it can convey,” explains Merritt.

Basketry
John McQueen is credited with the contemporary revival of basketry, one of the most ancient crafts. He lives in Saratoga Springs, where he grows and gathers the natural materials that he incorporates into his works.
In the Gallery’s piece, the artist has incorporated text into the body of the work. While three complete phrases can be decoded – A PIECE OF CAKE, MISSING THE BOAT, AND A PRIZE AT A PRICE – a sense of the fragmentary quality of individual words is created as each one is picked out. The negative space of the letters suggests the way in which words are openings for ideas, while the interlocked forms of the willow branches recall calligraphic forms.

"Lunar Movement is from a series I did in 1997-98," writes ceramist Andrea Gill, who teaches at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. "My thoughts at the time were very much about dance, and the title refers to that, and perhaps to the Lunar Moth, in reference to the wings on the vase. I have been working for a long time on large vases covered with layers of color and pattern. It is a combination of my fascination with the vase as a form for exploration of volume, and my love of color, pattern and ceramic surfaces."
Gill's visionary work advances the great tradition of pottery found in many ancient and modern cultures.
