It was a common practice to decorate the bows and sterns of sailing ships with sculptures made by expert carvers. Often, these creations were embellished with painted carved figures—hence the term 'figurehead'—and occasionally symbols that identified the ship's owner. This sternboard has both. It would have been placed in the rear - the stern - of the ship. Tradition has it that the sternboard's ship was owned by Elias Derby, a prodigiously wealthy merchant from Salem, Massachusetts whose fleet of ships traveled to remote parts of the world carrying trade goods.

The image of Christ on the cross is fundamental to Christian belief and the art that expresses it. The nearby Tramp Art Shrine, made in the northeastern United States, as well as many European works on the second floor of the Gallery, incorporate images similar to this santo made by an unknown santero. Santero is the traditional name for the carver of santos, which are typically figures of Christ or saints.
When European missionaries brought Catholicism across the ocean to the New World, they also brought with them traditional forms of religious iconography and woodcarving techniques. Spanish friars were the original santeros, carving the figures to decorate mission churches; during the 19th century, lay people became santeros, and santos became part of the domestic religious tradition.

Tramp art, originally thought to have been a style of woodworking used by hoboes to make gifts for people who provided them with hospitality, is now understood to encompass a broader group of work by self-taught artisans. Typically using found materials, the creators used a chip or notch carving technique and layering of materials to create optically dazzling patterns and designs.
In this work, an Armour meat packing box was used for the body of the shrine, to which layers of intricately decorated details were added. In the interior are references from the New Testament to the betrayal and death of Jesus, among them the cross, the cock, the ladder and the spear. While we do not know the artist’s name, the degree of his piety communicates itself through his painstaking creation of this personal shrine.
