Gallery label text 2013:
“When we think of a still life, we think of paintings that have a certain atmosphere or ambience. My still life paintings have none of those qualities, they just have pictures of certain things that are in a still life, like lemons and grapefruits and so forth. I’m never drawing the object itself; I’m only drawing a depiction of the object – a kind of crystallized symbol of it. It's not meant to have the usual still life meaning.”

From the portfolio "Eleven Pop Artists, Volume III"
Gallery label text 2013:
In the early 1960s, America’s reliance upon the television for entertainment was established, but with the launch of the Telstar I satellite in 1962 the TV also became a primary source for live, breaking news. Halfway through the decade nearly 90% of American households owned at least a black and white set.
TV Still Life may be Tom Wesselmann’s inquiry into what constitutes an appropriate subject for a modern still life. In evidence here is that most compelling quality of Pop art, the potential for conflicting interpretations: is this a celebration of popular culture or a critique?

Drypoint
Marion Stratton Gould Fund, 2003.39
Born in Rochester, Hananiah Harari's early art studies took place at the Memorial Art Gallery.
Harari was active in leftist politics, and helped found an artists’ union in 1936 to help improve the economic situation for artists during the Depression. He worked in both a semi-abstract style and a precise realist style.
Drypoint is an intaglio technique. A design is engraved with a hard steel needle (burin) creating incised lines in a metal plate, usually copper. The rough burr that remains at the sides of the incised lines produces a characteristic velvety black tone. This technique, unlike etching, does not require the use of acids.
