Alice Worthington Ball studied in Paris and lived variously in Boston, Baltimore, and Gloucester. In 1910, the Christian Science Monitor offered her this early if somewhat backhanded praise: “Miss Ball has mastered the craft and paints like a man.” Four years later, the Boston Evening Transcript was more specific: “Miss Ball is not a timid painter. She wields an emphatic brush.” At the conclusion of her one-person exhibition at MAG in April 1922, she presented this large, harmonious canvas as a gift.

Painting
From her limited formal art training, Hilda Altschule Coates evolved a personal and expressive style. What could Coates have embedded in this seemingly symbol-laden still life arranged in a corner of her apartment on Alexander Street? The initial sensation the viewer experiences is vertigo due to the dizzying perspective of the table and the white lily leaning towards the open third-floor window. Curiosity comes next. Who are the seven glasses for? Shouldn’t the lemon be in the empty fruit bowl rather than on the precipitously-tilted table? And why a white lily, traditionally a symbol of purity located near the Virgin Mary in paintings of the Annunciation? Unfortunately, a personal interpretation is lost to us as this painting was given to the Gallery after the artist’s death in 1983.
[Label text from It Came From the Vault exhibition, 2013]
“My art education is, and has been, without benefit of art school. I say this neither boastfully nor apologetically, simply with a wish to report the facts.” So wrote Hilda Altschule Coates, whose formal art training consisted of an undergraduate painting class while she worked on a degree in natural sciences at Hunter College, and another while pursuing her master’s degree in philosophy at Cornell University. Studying and working on her own, she evolved a style which she felt depended upon emotive rather than cerebral elements for its impact.
Many of Altschule’s paintings of the 30s and 40s are studies of interiors that draw the eye around a room and out the window to the world outside. This particular canvas shows the view from her apartment on Alexander Street in Rochester. The eccentric perspective and a fascination with surfaces – the cloudy glass of the goblets, the reflective tray upon which they rest, the warm patina of an antique table, and the glossy leaves of the lily plant – are characteristic of Altschule’s early work.
The lily is a symbol of purity; legend has it that the first lily sprang up from the tears Eve shed when she was expelled from the Garden of Eden.

Two masterpieces of nature – the hummingbird and the orchid – were subjects that Martin Johnson Heade painted repeatedly. Beginning in 1863, Heade made the first of three trips to Brazil to paint the bird that remained a life-long obsession. Heade wrote, “A few years after my appearance in this breathing world I was attacked by the all-absorbing hummingbird craze and it has never left me since.”
The exotic South American jungle was a far cry from the marshes and fields of Heade’s native New England, but both landscapes inspired his passion for the natural world and nurtured the intertwined development of his scientific interest and his artistic brilliance.

Ada Howe Kent was a Rochester painter and watercolorist who exhibited nationally with the American Water Color Society. Having studied with James McNeill Whistler in Paris, Kent became enamored of oriental art and accumulated an extensive collection of Japanese prints.
A daughter of John H. Kent, first vice-president of the Eastman Dry-plate and Film Company (forerunner of the Eastman Kodak Company), the artist was known for her philanthropic activities, most significantly for the gift of Kent Hall in 1916 to the Rochester Y.W.C.A. as a residence for women.

Karl Knaths seldom left his home in Provincetown, where he primarily painted familiar Cape Cod scenes: the rambling lilac bushes that overtake the island in the summer months and the local fishermen and their gear. The 1956 exhibition from which the Gallery purchased Lilacs and Books received a glowing review in the New York Times that predicted, “Knaths’ work may well be part of the work of our time that is likely to endure.” Despite his popularity in the 1950s, his lyrical style was eclipsed in the annals of history by the muscular, dripping abstractions of Jackson Pollock and other Abstract Expressionists.

A vision of fresh beauty in her portrait, Anne Mumford Palmer lived a life that was hardly placid. Born to a Rochester lawyer and his wife, Palmer moved to New York City after her father became the treasurer of Western Union. She was a good friend of the distinguished American writer Henry Adams and his wife, Clover.
An adventurous marriage to Englishman E. Nelson Fell included draining swamps in Florida to build a British colony called Fellsmere. Four years were spent with their three children on the Siberian steppes where Nelson Fell supervised a mining operation.
When Anne Mumford Palmer, age 22, was painted by Abbott Thayer, newly returned from studying in France, her life lay ahead of her like a limitless ocean. When she sold the painting to MAG founder Emily Sibley Watson in 1930, she was nearing the end of her remarkable journey, and would die seven years later. More remains to be learned about an interesting life.

Color wood engraving
Gift of Mrs. John McKinney, 97.168
A Rochester native, Havens is considered part of the color woodblock revival of the early 20th century. Self- taught as a printmaker, he specialized in woodcuts and wood engravings, but he also painted. His design for the logo of the Print Club of Rochester, which he helped found, remains in use to this day.
Color wood engraving is a relief technique. A design is cut with sharp wood gouges on end-grain wood. The raised uncut surface is inked with a brayer. Paper is laid on it and the ink is transferred by burnishing with a hard surfaced tool, such as a baren or spoon. Multiple blocks are created for each separate color. In order to economize, some colors are intentionally printed together to create a third color.

A variety of objects seem to occupy their own dimension as they hover above oriental rugs in Oxman’s meticulously printed still lifes. Postcard images provide subtle comments on art historical themes, invoking the presence of realist and abstract artists as well as linking Oxman with images of the past and present.

Andy Warhol regularly appropriated imagery from other artists. Here, he based his image on a photograph of hibiscus flowers by Patricia Caulfield in "Modern Photography", June 1964.
[Gallery label text 2012]
Warhol’s Flowers series was based upon a photo published in the June 1964 issue of Modern Photography taken by the magazine’s editor, Patricia Caulfield. Warhol’s appropriation of images was to have an enormous effect upon later artists—turn around to see Devorah Sperber’s appropriation of Grant Wood’s painting, American Gothic—but it was not appreciated by Caulfield who threatened to sue Warhol when she saw his Flowers. Although Caulfield never filed a lawsuit, Warhol did pay her for the use of her photo.

Painting
Rococo, from the French word rocaille (rockwork or shell), was an 18th century decorative style that reacted against the classical tradition of the Academy and instead stressed color, light, movement, and a frank pleasure in living. The easy flowing brushwork and the luminous colors show the influence of Rubens.
As a rococo painter, François Boucher worked primarily in the service of Madame de Pompadour, mistress to Louis XV. His paintings satisfied the taste of a sophisticated public which was sensitive to the most subtle relations of color and liked pictures hung on the light paneling of even the smallest room.
This intimate painting of "Venus and Cupid," with its sensuously modeled nudes, embodies the French 18th century tendency to transform the Baroque style into one of more delicate elaboration and elegance. An 18th-century engraving, which P. Aveline made after the painting, is inscribed "F. Boucher pinxit."

Unearthed on the site of a private bath in Hamadan, 1918.
verso, During the 2007 small object inventory there was some confusion between this object, 21.2, and the object now in embark as 21.1.
After exhaustive research, the following information was gathered:
Each of these two tiles were found with the numbers now given to them painted on their verso in red paint. Yet, according to the log book and catalog cards, these two tiles were characterized as both being "Glazed pottery with over glazed painting. Decorated with a design of birds and flowers in blue and black. Dug up on site of a private bath in Hamadan, 1918." While this description matches the tile found painted and now considered 21.2, it does not match the tile found painted and now considered 21.1. To further confuse matters, the log book and catalog cards both mention that the tile 21.1 was broken. In 2007, only 21.2 was found to be broken (upper left corner). In addition, the dimensions documented in the log book and catalog cards for both objects are incorrect, but incorrect to a greater degree for the tile painted and now considered 21.1.
One possible hypothesis is that the original tile accessioned into the collection as 21.1 was either lost or completely destroyed at one point, and the tile found numbered and now considered 21.1 was "found in collection" and took the place of 21.1. Whether this decision was made knowingly or out of ignorance is unclear.
Another possible hypothesis that the the tile found numbered and now considered 21.2 was originally 21.1 (which may account for the description of the tile that entered the collection as 21.1 being "broken") and the tile that entered the collection as 21.2 was lost or destroyed at one point. The tile found numbered and now considered 21.1 was "found in collection" and mistakenly took the place of 21.1 and the tile that entered the collection as 21.1 was mistakenly numbered as 21.2.
A true mystery indeed.
Conclusion: In order to reduce confusion in the future when working with the objects in storage, the numbers painted on the verso of each tile in red remain and those designations now define their identity. Although this may not be as they were entered into the collection, the tile painted 21.1 is now considered 21.1 and the tile painted 21.2 is now considered 21.2. At the present time, it is impossible to prove otherwise.
See the object files for more information.

Painting
This painting has all the elements of the Christian medieval tradition of an allegory of vanity, or the personification of all the temptations and vain pleasures of the world. The painter drew on a wide vocabulary of images to suggest the transience of the material world. In this painting, dressed in fine clothes and bedecked in jewels, the woman seems to be turning away from the mirror, the symbol of vanity. In reality, though, out of the corner of her eye she gazes approvingly at her own reflection. The mirror also represents the idea of false appearances; her jewels symbolize the dangerous allure of wealth. Fresh flowers, beautiful for only a few days, suggest the fleeting nature of beauty; the book on her table refers to earthly rather than spiritual knowledge.
