As the first historical bishop of the Church, Saint Peter is often represented as a figure of ecclesiastical authority. Here, he wears the full regalia of a bishop, including tiara, alb, and stole. He sits on a simple horizontal throne with a book, most likely the Gospels, open in his lap. In his left hand he holds a key, his standard attribute or identifying characteristic. He raises his right hand in the traditional sign of blessing.
Despite the high relief of the carving, the sculpture itself is extremely shallow. It was probably the center part of a medium-sized altarpiece with painted or carved wings showing scenes from Saint Peter’s life.

Large-scale sculpted groups of the crucified Christ, the Virgin, and Saint John were frequently found in Spanish medieval churches. They were located either above the choir screen that separated the area for the clergy from the main body of the church or against a side wall.
The Crucifix dates about 50 years earlier than the pair of the Mourning Virgin [52.33.1] and Saint John [52.33.2]. The museum purchased these three sculptures together in 1952 with the intent of representing this important genre of Spanish medieval art.

Hand looms are traditionally used by West African men in weaving narrow-strips of cloth. While the heddle pulley is a crucial functional element of the loom, the elaborately carved figure is not. These decorative figures, which fell out of fashion at the end of the last century, were made beautiful simply for the delight and pleasure of the weaver. The human compulsion to beautify functional objects is explained simply by a Guro artist who said, “We cannot live without such beautiful things.”

At the First Council of Ephesus in 431 CE, Mary’s divine status was confirmed by church leaders. After this, images of her as the mother of Christ became icons of Catholic art and faith. Some depictions include elaborate groupings of angels and saints while others, such as this sculpture, focus our attention on their corporeal bond as mother and child. Images of Jesus in Mary’s arms, both as an infant and as an adult man, permeate the history of western art.
