Born in America, Lyonel Feininger spent much of his adult life living and painting in Germany. He developed his own personal style of Cubism in which splinters of form and space are rhythmic and interlocking. At the time the Nazis took over the German government and its cultural properties in the 1930s, the National Museum of Halle owned Zirchow VI. The Nazi campaign against abstract art, labeled “degenerate,” led to the sale of the museum’s collection of modern paintings including Zirchow VI.

Title is taken from Memorial Exhibition.
George Herdle was one of the most versatile and influential leaders of Rochester’s arts community around the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to being a fine landscape painter, he was president of the Rochester Art Club for nearly two decades and, in 1913, he became the first director of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.
Herdle’s legacy is visible in the building and collections that surround you, as well as in the tradition of connoisseurship and artistic vitality that he transmitted to his two daughters, Gertrude Herdle Moore and Isabel C. Herdle. Gertrude took over at the Gallery as director after her father’s untimely death, and Isabel worked by her side as curator and associate director for many years. The family was honored by the naming of the Herdle Fountain Court on the second floor of the Gallery.

American art, by Rochester artists, cityscapes, houses, paintings, views of Rochester & western New York
Painting
The 1839 Pitkin House, just a few blocks away from MAG at 474 East Avenue, was one of the first mansions built in the area. The rutted dirt of the street contrasts with the elegant brick edifice of the house, but wooden braces along the road supporting newly-planted trees reveal that East Avenue was being gentrified. William Pitkin, who selected the lot and had the house built, was at first a druggist, but went on to become a banker, an alderman, a University of Rochester trustee, and the mayor of Rochester in 1844-45. Later, another well-known Rochester entrepreneur, Daniel Powers, lived in the house. He opened the first public art gallery in the city in his grand Powers Building at the Four Corners.
This painting was made by Rochester artist Charles Willson during Powers’ tenure in the house. At a time when paintings of houses were used to demonstrate the wealth and good taste of the homeowners, Willson was clever enough to depict the house from an angle that shows the deep lot and additions at the back, something that would not have been seen if he’d painted the house from the front.

Painting
This painting was never intended to hang on a wall. Rather, it was created as part of a wall to decorate a panel underneath a tall window in the parlor of a home in Eagle Mills, New York, near Albany.
The artist was an unusual individual. In addition to painting scenes to decorate rooms in the Albany region, Joseph Hidley was a house painter, a carpenter, and arranger of stuffed birds and dried flowers.
For his underwindow panels, he is thought to have derived his inspiration from European viewbooks, which is why this scene is reminiscent of a Swiss landscape. We are still trying to locate the original view that Hidley copied.

Painting
About the time this work was painted, Le Sidaner's art was compared by a French critic with the music of his countryman and exact contemporary Claude Debussy. The painting's subtle, almost monochromatic coloring, with daubing brushstrokes creating a soft, flickering play of light over surfaces, is certain reminiscent of Debussy's dappled tonal effects.

Painting
Thaulow spent much time painting in France. This scene probably represents Manéhouville, a village on the Schie River near Dieppe in Normandy. A friend of many of the Impressionists, although he did not experiment with colors of light as they did, Thaulow convinced Claude Monet to visit Norway one winter to paint the snow.

Painting
Le Prince studied with the rococo painter François Boucher and adopted his master's delicate manner and cool, pastel palette in his early work. Dating from late in his career, however, "The Visit" demonstrates a greater naturalism, reflecting the increasing popularity of seventeenth-century Dutch painting in eighteenth-century France. In this canvas, Le Prince has combined a genre scene with a panoramic landscape to suggest a gracious moment in everyday rural life. The subject of nobles visiting a peasant family would have appealed to the sense of humanity cultivated during the Enlightenment.
