Psalm 51:15 [or Vulgate 50:17]: Domine labia mea aperies et os meum adnuntiabit laudem tuam (O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise).
Books of Hours are Christian prayer books that, beginning in the 1200s, were used in the private devotional practices of the laity. They had several components, including a calendar, the four Gospel Lessons, the Hours of the Virgin, the Hours of the Cross and Holy Spirit, special prayers to the Virgin and saints, and the Office of the Dead. Some Books of Hours were special commissions, created by artists attached to royal courts; others were standardized “stock” that were ordered and then personalized for individual patrons.
This leaf is the first page of the Hours of the Cross, which traditionally opens with an illuminated initial letter, an illustration of the Crucifixion, and the accompanying prayer: “Lord, open Thou my lips and my mouth shall show forth Thy Praise.”

As a young man, George Frederick Watts briefly studied at the Royal Academy, and he was a friend and peer of both academic and Pre-Raphaelite artists, but his brushwork was looser than that utilized by either of those schools, and his subject matter generally more mystical than literary or historical. Here, Cupid distracts a youth holding a bow by whispering in his ear. It was not uncommon for Watts to paint multiple versions of a composition, and this is one of four versions of this painting. As early as 1844, the artist gave sketches of the composition to a sweetheart, but the degree of finish to this canvas suggests a date later in his career. Watts was known to rework his paintings over a long period of time, so it may have been started in the 1840s and not considered finished for many years. An intriguing comparison is an 1865 portrait of the artist taken by famed Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron: Whisper of the Muse depicts a similar scene, with a youthful muse providing inspiration to Watts, who poses as a musician.

This allegorical sculpture depicts Night as a woman with a star on her brow and a crescent moon curving around her body. These attributes link the figure to the chaste goddess Diana, often depicted wearing a crown in the shape of a crescent moon.
Symbolic figures satisfied artists’ desire to portray themes and ideas in tangible ways. Simultaneously, allegorical and mythological subjects lifted the female figure out of the realm of reality and into the sphere of the ideal, where audiences could enjoy the sight of the nude female body without social repercussions.

Sculpture
This figural sculpture, depicting a semi-nude woman in neoclassical drapery leaning back against an elaborate architectural pedestal, must date to the end of the 19th century, but it observes the rules of earlier Academic art: the figure is not identified as a portrait of a specific person nor a character from legend. Her wisp of clothing and archaeological setting suggest an historical reference, but in her anonymity, she is a universal figure.
Fiaschi produced a great number of these figures in a variety of sizes, raising the question of the means of production of these copies. It is likely that he oversaw a studio whose team of artists created the duplicates of his original work to fill the demand that arose.

Monchablon was inspired by the rise of photography to experiment with detailed naturalism in painting. At the same time, he also applied Impressionist color theory. The result is a unique vision of the French countryside.

Sculpture
As the first historical bishop of the Church, Saint Peter is often represented as a figure of ecclesiastical authority. Here, he wears the full regalia of a bishop, including tiara, alb, and stole. He sits on a simple horizontal throne with a book, most likely the Gospels, open in his lap. In his left hand he holds a key, his standard attribute or identifying characteristic. He raises his right hand in the traditional sign of blessing.
Despite the high relief of the carving, the sculpture itself is extremely shallow. It was probably the center part of a medium-sized altarpiece with painted or carved wings showing scenes from Saint Peter’s life.

The inscription on the steps in this painting identifies the subject as a rarely depicted episode in the life of Elisha (II Kings 2:23-25). Presaging Christ’s acts of charity, the Old Testament prophet is shown alleviating the poverty of a widow by miraculously providing her with oil to sell.
The widow, in great debt and concerned that a creditor would take her two sons to be bondsmen, approached Elisha for help. When he asked if she owned anything of value, she replied that she had only a pot of oil. Elisha instructed the widow to borrow as many vessels as possible from all her neighbors. She poured her small amount of oil into each vessel; each of them remained full. When she told Elisha of the miracle, he said “Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt; you and your children shall live from the rest.”

This elaborately decorated small triptych was used for private devotion. The center depicts Christ’s Nativity. Together, the hinged wings flank the central image to tell the story of the Annunciation to the Virgin. Mary, with an open book in her lap, is on the right panel, while the winged image of the angel Gabriel is on the left.

According to legend, Sebastian was an officer of the imperial guard of the Roman emperor Diocletian. This sculpture shows Sebastian’s fate when it was revealed that he was a Christian: he was sentenced to execution, bound to a stake, and shot with arrows. Left for dead, his wounds were healed by Irene, the widow of another martyr. When he again appeared before the Emperor, Sebastian was ordered beaten to death.
This statue may once have been part of the high altar of the Cistercian abbey of Fürstenfeld, a town near Munich, Germany. The detailed and vigorous carving of Sebastian’s face, the elegance of his posture, and the ornamental drapery, with its elaborate folds and angles, are characteristics of the Gothic style as it manifest in southern Germany.

1600-1800, European art, paintings, Tobias and the Angel
Painting
Although the figures in this idealized pastoral landscape seem almost incidental to the painting, they represent the biblical story of Tobias and the Angel. The angel Raphael tells Tobias that he is destined to marry Sara, even though each of her previous seven husbands had died by the hand of an evil spirit on their wedding night. When Tobias survived the marriage, his new father-in-law was so elated that he gave Tobias half his wealth, including money, servants, farm animals and household possessions. This painting shows the angel Raphael guiding the joyful Tobias with Sara and his newfound riches along a winding road as they journey safely home.
Jan Glauber, one of the most widely traveled of all Dutch painters, specialized in landscapes that were influenced by his visits to France and Italy. This painting was probably intended to decorate a private home.

“The Holy Trinity,” the concept that there are three Persons in the unity of God, is the central doctrine of the Christian religion. Although these three Persons—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit—are distinct from each other, the Christian faith holds that there are not three gods but one. In Christian art, three elements represent the Trinity. The image of an older patriarch refers to God the Father; God the Son, or Christ, is usually shown either crucified on a cross or, as in this painting, after his death; and the Holy Spirit appears as a dove in flight.
During the Counter-Reformation, images of the Trinity emphasized the physical nature of Christ by focusing on his suffering and death. Like other dramatic works of Counter-Reformation art, the intent was to evoke an emotional response from the faithful that would lead to increased devotion.
This painting is one of several variations of Giaquinto’s Dead Christ with the Trinity (1741-1742), a fresco he painted in the apse of S. Giovanni Calibita in Rome.

Sculpture
This statue represents a bishop, a key figure of the Church who oversees churches within a specific geographical area. In his left hand, he holds a crozier, now broken at the top, which is the hooked or curved shepherd’s staff that symbolizes the bishop’s role within the church as a pastoral leader. His right hand is raised in blessing. This bishop also has a richly-jeweled mitre, a tall peaked cap that is worn only by bishops, cardinals and the pope. His cope, or outer cloak, is carved to indicate elaborate embroidery.
Standing figures of this size often occupied niches at the sides of elaborate tombs or stood on top of columns, on consoles, and in doorways. This sculpture most likely represents an early Christian bishop saint or a long-dead holy figure from local history rather than a living person.

Flanked by angels carrying censers, God the Father makes the sign of benediction. Angels gather blood from Christ’s wounds into chalices, emphasizing the liturgical significance of the scene. Although acquired by the museum six years apart, these two sculptures [this piece and 43.35] once belonged to the same monumental architectural group on the exterior of a church. They represent an apostle and an angel, both of whom gaze upward. They were probably part of a larger program focusing on the Ascension of Christ, which would have shown the central figure of Christ flanked at either side by witnesses to the sacred event.

Sculpture
A baptismal font is a basin that serves as a vessel for the water used in the religious ceremony of Christian baptism, or initiation. This font is decorated with the symbols of the four evangelists, the writers of the Gospel books of the New Testament. The angel represents Saint Matthew; the lion, Saint Mark; the ox, Saint Luke; and the eagle, Saint John. According to Christian tradition, the four Evangelists are also equated with the four rivers of Eden that spring from the Fountain of Life, a concept fitting to the sacred water and spiritual birth associated with the ritual of Christian baptism.

Large-scale sculpted groups of the crucified Christ, the Virgin, and Saint John were frequently found in Spanish medieval churches. They were located either above the choir screen that separated the area for the clergy from the main body of the church or against a side wall.
The Crucifix [52.34] dates about 50 years earlier than the pair of the Mourning Virgin and Saint John [52.33.2]. The museum purchased these three sculptures together in 1952 with the intent of representing this important genre of Spanish medieval art.

Sculpture
The remarkable bond between a mother and her child begins with gestation and continues after birth through touch. Our first lessons on how to interact with our world and the people around us begin in our mother’s arms. Giacomo Manzù captured this intensely physical relationship in a series of sculptures of women with their children in various states of embrace and caress. This sculpture was never put into production, and the chalky remains of the casting process remain on its surface.

Painting
Vicenzo Catena was active a generation after Hans Memling, the Northern Renaissance artist who inspired Kehinde Wiley’s contemporary portrait nearby. Despite a difference of 500 years in the creation of Catena’s and Wiley’s portraits, the similarities are striking. Both are three-quarter profiles of young men of their day, set in a distant landscape. The sitters are linked not by social status but by their stillness and intensity of gaze, and by their immediate relationship to the viewer.
Catena’s patrons were primarily members of the aristocratic and wealthy classes of Venice, Italy, of which the sitter for "Portrait of a Young Man" was certainly a member. The portrait’s aesthetic appeal derives from the simple, crisp composition; high level of craftsmanship; strong characterization of the sitter; and fluid use of brilliant and contrasting oil glazes.

In her letter to the donor of this sculpture, then Gallery Director Gertrude Herdle Moore thanked him for the “prehistoric bronze handle in the form of a horned animal.” There is no record as to what the figurine might have been a handle for. It was initially thought to be from the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago southwest of Great Britain, but inquiries to scholars in that region revealed otherwise. The culture and date of origin for the little bronze animal remain unknown.

Sculpture
In Christian tradition, the scene of the Annunciation depicts the moment of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a child and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. Here, the Virgin kneels before a large open book on a reading pulpit. The winged Gabriel faces her, kneeling on the other side of the pulpit. The hand of God emerges from the frame at the top, directing a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, toward the Virgin’s head.
This sculpture was originally an architectural keystone, the central stone of an arch that locks its parts together. The structure of the back of the piece indicates that it probably came from the center of a square vault with four ribs. Its small size and the high level of detail in the carving suggest that it was installed close to the viewer where it could be easily seen, perhaps in a bay of a cloister walk or in a small porch.

For Ambroise Vollard's third "Album des Peintres-Gravures," unpublished.
Cézanne based this color lithograph on his painting that dates from 20 years earlier. The print was commissioned by the successful French art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard, who represented many well-known French artists of the late 1800s, including Cézanne, Renoir, and Degas.
Vollard’s albums comprised works by “painter-printmakers” rather than by artists who were printmakers by profession. Many Impressionist artists were intrigued by the challenges and potential of lithography, etching, and engraving, and used the printmaking medium to extend their reach beyond painting.

A chasuble is the outer garment worn by a priest or bishop when celebrating the Mass, the core sacred ritual of the Roman Catholic faith. The embroidered bands down the front and back, called orphreys, depict events from the life of the Virgin Mary.
Clues to the origin and date of the chasuble emerge from both the medium and the design of the orphreys. While the gold thread and velvet suggest a Spanish origin, the designs themselves have been attributed to the famous Flemish artist Jan Gossaert. The designs may have been commissioned by a Spanish patron. Such an alliance is well imaginable, as during the 1520s both Spain and the Netherlands were ruled by the Hapsburg family; trade, both artistic or mercantile, flourished between the two territories.
