Painting
This painting depicts the New Testament story of one of the most popular devotional images in Christian art, the Adoration of the Magi. After Christ was born, three wealthy Magi, or Kings, from the east came to Jerusalem seeking the one “who was born king of the Jews.” When they found him near Bethlehem with Mary and Joseph, seen here standing behind the Virgin and infant Christ, they “bowed down and worshipped him, opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.”

Painting
Paul Vredeman de Vries' "Interior of a Gothic Church" is a remarkable example of early architectural painting, a genre that was an integral response of 16th and 17th century Flemish painters to Italian Renaissance art and architecture. The artist was trained by and worked with his father, Hans Vredeman de Vries, the author of "Scenographiae, sive perspectiva" (1560). This influential treatise served as pattern-book for architectural painters and introduced two of their most common subjects: the palace court with views through arcades and archways, and the extended view down the center of an imaginary church.
In this painting, Paul Vredeman de Vries' use of linear perspective, tonal rather than bright colors, and realistic effects of light and atmosphere give the viewer the sensation of being in the interior of the church rather than seeing it from a distance. His meticulous attention to details such as the painted altarpiece on the left, the open doorways on the right and left, and the baptismal font in the center suggest that he has painted the interior of an actual rather than imaginary church. He does, however, make at least one step into the imaginary: he has embedded his signature in the tombstone at the far left of the painting and the date in the tombstone left of center.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was Queen of Thuringia in the early 1200s. She was an advocate of the poor and gave herself entirely to serving the hungry, weak and feeble. She distributed alms in all parts of her royal territory, even giving royal robes and ornaments to the poor. In order to care personally for the unfortunate, she built a hospital and visited the inmates daily to attend to their needs. In art, she is frequently shown carrying a loaf of bread and a jug of wine, references to her devotion to feeding the hungry.

Every pictorial element in this full-length portrait of a young boy refers to his aristocratic heritage and high status in society. His costume is made of a richly-textured fabric trimmed with buttons of gold; the elegant purse at his waist, his fashionable small plumed hat and the golden hilt of his sword attest to the wealth of his family. The coat of arms on the gilded medallion he holds in his right hand clearly identifies him as a member of the Bracciforte family of Piacenza, one of the richest cities in Renaissance Europe. A book, flute and allegorical statue of Fame, shown here as a winged figure holding two long, thin trumpets, are on a table at his right; they suggest the importance of education and music in the highest strata of Renaissance society.
For decades, this portrait was attributed to the painter Niccolò dell’Abate. Recent scholarship, however, has suggested that it is the work of Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli, who was well known for his portraits of the Farnese and other notable and aristocratic families in the Duchy of Piacenza as well as the nearby Duchy of Parma. These two duchies united only a few years after this portrait was painted.

Set against a backdrop of the ruins of a church, this picture depicts the adoration of the infant Christ by his mother and three kneeling angels. The two shepherds at the left, along with their animals, are about to enter the ruins; at the right, standing under a broken arch, Joseph carries a lighted candle. Three angels hover above the scene in the remains of the church gable. The artist renders in meticulous detail richly decorated fabrics, architectural motifs and foliage as well as the story of the picture. The landscape in the background possibly depicts an actual location in the Netherlands.

1400-1600, dragons, paintings, Renaissance & Baroque, St. Margaret, women
Painting
This painting, which shows a woman in contemporary dress kneeling in devotion before an open prayer book, her patron saint behind her, was once the right wing of a small triptych, or three-part altarpiece. Saint Margaret, who is recognizable through her attributes, or identifying symbols, holds a cross; a fanged dragon is at her feet. According to the story, Margaret spent her life following the teachings of Christ. The governor of Antioch in the ancient Roman province of Syria, now modern Turkey, fell in love with Margaret’s beauty and asked her to marry him. She rejected his proposal, vowing to remain a virgin. The governor sent her to prison, where the Devil appeared to Margaret as a dragon. She was saved by her Christian faith: when the dragon swallowed Margaret, she made the sign of the cross, which split the dragon in two and allowed her to escape from his belly unharmed.
The left panel of the altarpiece, now in the Allen Memorial Art Museum of Oberlin University in Oberlin, Ohio, is a mirror image of this scene and depicts the woman’s husband also kneeling in devotion with his patron saint behind him. The center panel of the altarpiece to which the couple offers their prayers was probably a painting of the Virgin and infant Christ.

Sculpture
This sculpture was originally part of the tomb of Philip the Bold, who was the ruler of the Netherlands and regent of France until his death in 1404. Forty mourning figures, called pleurants, form a procession around the base of the tomb. Each is placed in an arcade characterized by gothic architectural forms. The gisants, or funerary statues, of the Duke and his wife rest on top of the tomb.
The tomb of Philip the Bold, originally in the Carthusian monastery of Champmol at Dijon, France, was destroyed in the French Revolution. Many of the surviving fragments, including the top of this arcade, were salvaged and then sold to collectors. The tomb was extensively restored from 1818 to 1823 and now stands in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon.

According to Christian legend, Saint Barbara was the beautiful daughter of a wealthy pagan named Dioscorus, who lived in Nicodemia (present-day Turkey) during the 3rd century. Fearful of losing Barbara to the outside world, her father kept her locked in a tower. She secretly converted to Christianity; when she told Dioscorus of her new-found faith, he reported her to the authorities. She was sentenced to torture and beheading—a decree carried out by her father himself.
In Christian art, Barbara is usually shown holding the tower in which she was imprisoned and a book, which represents the teachings that led to her conversion. Here, she also wears fine clothing that represents her wealth. A purse hangs from her belt, and she wears a golden crown.
This sculpture originally formed part of a larger late medieval altarpiece that included other solitary or grouped figures. Although beautifully carved, the last 500 years have taken their toll on both her appearance and structure. Old repairs have broken off or splintered, and both original and later paint and gilding are flaking, making her too unstable for continuous display. MAG staff is working to identify funds for her treatment so that she can be returned to permanent exhibition in the medieval galleries.

Painting
This panel was once part of a large and complex altarpiece dedicated to Saint Andrew, one of Christ’s apostles. It illustrates one important episode in the saint’s life. According to Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend, written around 1288, a devout bishop venerated Saint Andrew above all others saints. He began whatever he was about to do with the prayer, “To the honor of God and Saint Andrew.” This filled the devil with envy, and he turned all his cunning to the task of deceiving the bishop.
In order to accomplish this deceit, the devil took the form of a beautiful woman, who arrived at the bishop’s palace under the guise of seeking refuge from an unwanted marriage. In actuality, her intent was to seduce the bishop into breaking his vow of celibacy. The seduction was interrupted by the arrival of a pilgrim, who was asked three difficult questions. His answer to the last, that the woman could measure the space between heaven and earth because she had fallen the distance, unmasked her as the devil, shown here by her bat-like clawed hands, furred arms, and pointed ears. Later, a dream revealed to the bishop that the identity of the pilgrim was Saint Andrew.

According to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew, King Herod, ruler of Judea, or ancient Palestine, ordered the infant Christ killed upon hearing of his birth. Warned by an angel in a dream of the danger, Joseph fled into Egypt with Mary and the baby. In this painting, Mary nurses Christ while Joseph tends their donkey in a lush landscape modeled on those local to the artist rather than the desert the Holy Family actually crossed. This scene was a particular favorite of the artist Joachim Patinir, who specialized in depicting semi-imaginary landscapes with meandering rivers and soft, protruding cliffs and rock arches.

Sculpture
In the Middle Ages, faithful Christians made pilgrimages to sacred sites in Europe and the Holy Land. One of the most important was to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Greater. Numerous altars dedicated to Saint James were located in churches along the route, allowing the travelers to pray daily for a successful journey. This statue was originally placed in a niche above such an altar.
Here, Saint James is dressed as a pilgrim, wearing a broad-brimmed, black hat with the image of a scallop shell, a traditional Christian symbol of pilgrimage. He holds the customary staff that supported the pilgrim, giving him strength to overcome the forces of evil and arrive safely at the cathedral. The figure carries a scrip, or alms sack, that is also decorated with the scallop shell. The scrip symbolizes that the pilgrim, trusting in the Lord, carried very little money.
The sculpture retains much of its original coloring; slight traces of gilding can be seen on the edge of the saint’s cloak and the knobs of his staff.

From Cornelisz van Haarlem's series of The Four Disgracers. The full set depicts Tantalus, Icarus, Phaeton, and Ixion, each of whom fell while trying to enter the sphere of the gods. Ixion fell in love with Hera, the wife of Zeus; as punishment, Zeus bound Ixion to a flaming wheel which revolved continually in Tantalus, the Greek Hell. Both Ovid and Virgil wrote about Ixion's fate.

Painting
This altarpiece is painted in the style of Nardo di Cione, one of the most influential Florentine painters working in the decades following the plague, or Black Death, of 1348. In the central panel the Madonna holds the Christ Child, who bears a scroll with the beginning of the inscription “I am the light of the world.” On the left, John the Baptist holds a scroll reading “Behold the Lamb of God” and points toward Christ; on the right, St. Peter displays the key to the kingdom of heaven and respectfully covers his hand to hold the Bible. On the far left and right of the polyptych, or multi-part painting, are Sts. Francis and Dominic, founders of the two most important mendicant monastic orders.

With his extensive knowledge of science, anatomy, and the natural world, Albrecht Dürer epitomized the ideals of the Renaissance. He was the greatest artistic genius of his time and essentially changed the conception of printmaking in Germany. Dürer learned the techniques for engraving from his family of goldsmiths, but was later apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut, a well-known Nuremberg painter and maker of woodcuts. He was uniquely placed to learn and work in engraving, woodcut, and painting, although without his brilliance, these opportunities would have been unfulfilled.

Reverse copy after a drawing by Albrecht Dürer.
Public baths for both men and women enjoyed great popularity in Renaissance Germany; women’s baths in particular were frequent subjects of artists like Albrecht Dürer and his followers. Images of female nudity often carried erotic overtones, as seen here in the woman at center, who gazes directly at the viewer while turning her body in a frontal pose. These depictions of the female nude sometimes carried moral and menacing messages, as they were also used to portray women as prostitutes and witches.
