A heat haze gathers at the base of distant hills; a lone truck kicks up a trail of dust on a scorched dirt road; the cool blue of a quiet river beckons amidst arid surroundings. River and Canal, San Patricio, a deceptively evocative painting, exemplifies Peter Hurd’s southwest landscapes. The artist wrote of his native New Mexico, “I knew, even as a boy of five or six, that there was about that land… something very special and strangely exciting.”

Reginald Marsh inherited the Urban Realist interest in the act of seeing and being seen. His art often addressed sexuality in the urban environment, as in this painting of a burlesque hall.

Perhaps best known as the illustrator of the popular Madeline books, Ludwig Bemelmans breathes unexpected life into Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Established by Napoleon in 1803, the 125-acre cemetery is the final resting place of such famous figures as Héloise and Abelard, Honoré de Balzac, Frederic Chopin, Oscar Wilde, and Jim Morrison. At least six gendarmes are depicted in this watercolor, most giving directions to bewildered tourists and one giving chase to a dog on the loose.

The creator of the beloved Madeline stories had a sharp and satirical eye for the scenes that he found around him in his adopted city of New York. In addition to his children’s books, Bemelmans illustrated for the New Yorker, Vogue, and Holiday magazines. Currently, the curator is trying to determine if this artwork was designed for a New Yorker cover.
Upscale New York restaurant were familiar territories for Bemelmans. At age 14, he was apprenticed to his uncle, a hotelier in the Tyrol. The young Bemelmans’ lack of success – and outright bad behavior – contributed to his emigration to America, where he sought his fortune as a waiter at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in New York City. After serving in World War I, he opened and decorated his own restaurant. When a friend in the publishing business suggested that he turn his whimsical paintings into stories, Bemelmans wrote his first children’s book – Hansi. In 1939, Madeline appeared. He went on to write for adults, and in 1941, wrote Hotel Splendide, a fictional account of a grand hotel with an elegant, but problem-ridden restaurant.
Bemelmans is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His public work survives in the 1947 mural commission for the Hotel Carlyle on Madison Avenue – in what is now called Bemelmans Bar.

As a symbol of American invention and progress, the telegraph pole and its wires frame a depressing landscape. The curved pole, clearly a tree cut down and stripped of its bark and limbs, is a powerful metaphor for the abuse that man and nature experience under the unstoppable momentum of industry. Railroad tracks lined by austere workers’ huts lead the viewer’s eyes back to an industrial inferno.
Buffalo artist Charles Burchfield felt a great deal of reverence for the natural world. His nuanced depictions of the industrial landscape were indictments of environmental abuse.
