These were taken for a Rochester magazine article that was never published, and Andy Olenick subsequently photographed the case with proper color and light controls, but it was decided to retain these photos for reference.
This object was presented at the October 1959 Art Committee; the minutes record it as being accepted at that meeting, and a thanks letter was sent to the donor in March of 1960 saying the work had been accepted. However, the work was never numbered nor recorded in the registrar’s ledger nor cards, so this letter was the only documentation of the 1960 acceptance. The object was found in Sculpture Storage in 2014 labelled with an incorrect number. It was tagged with a T number, T765, for tracking in Embark. After correspondence and the 1959 Art Committee minutes were found identifying the object, the chest was re-presented at the Art Committee meeting of December 2017, and accepted. The work was given the accession number 2017.25. --KSchauber, Curatorial Research Ass’t, Dec 2017
This object was mistakenly numbered 55.28. This mistake was discovered when the real 55.28 was located during small object inventory.
Jessica Marten, Assistant Curator, July 14, 2008
This cabinet mentioned in Art Committee minutes of January 1959 as gift of M/M Geib, but not accessioned at that time. Thanks letter sent to Geibs in October 1959.

Many of the ivory inlay pieces are missing, some appear to have been have been reglued in different places. Biggest panel on front has someone turning into a tree (Daphnis and Chloe?). All the scenes are mythological. Square corner decorations are profile heads. Inside are two cabinets and eight drawers, each with a panel with a story on it. Inside the lid are four narrative panels and four decorative panels with birds, one in each corner. The top has 3 narrative panels in poor condition and three profile heads, one is missing. Ivory narrative panel on either end with decorative panels as well. Lots of the veneer is lost from the top, front and sides. Inside, several pieces of molding are missing. Most of the drawers have lost some of their molding. Looks like the cabinets used to latch and have knobs to open them-- now no knobs nor latches. Metal key plate on the front [key is stored with chest]. Metal strap hinges. Metal handles on either end, which appear to be screwed in with modern screws. Back is plain wood, painted black.

D&C 9-9-89: Dr. Fred W.
