Its survival may rest on the fact that it entered the museum’s collection so soon after it was painted, as every August the artist would evaluate the contents of his studio and destroy anything that wasn’t up to his exacting standards. According to Berry’s widow, Fishwife is painted in a style quite different from most of his work. A turbaned Haitian woman lifts an enormous, wide-eyed fish from a wicker basket; the diagonal line of her muscular arm echoes the ramshackle roofline of the building behind her. The influence of photography is seen in the arm of a third person poking in from the left side of the composition. Leighton was one of the finest engravers of her time. Born in London, England, she graduated from the Slade School of Art and also attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She learned wood engraving during a revival of the craft and had access to skilled masters. Leighton began her career reproducing prints in several English publications, and simultaneously developed her work during sketching trips to France, Italy and the Balkans. In 1939 she immigrated to the United States, where she exhibited and lectured widely and won numerous commissions. She was most well-known for writing and illustrating over 65 books reflecting on agricultural lifestyle and the contrasts of urban modernization. Leighton taught at Duke University, lectured at the National Academy of Design and received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. However, an incident in Charleston, South Carolina, inspired him to create the story in plaster. During the Civil War, as the Union army moved in to Confederate territory, citizens were required to take a loyalty oath in order to obtain food rations. Rogers has captured one mother’s conflict as she swears loyalty to the hated Union while keeping a protective hand on her child’s head. The Union soldier who is administering the oath tips his cap, simultaneously the chivalrous gentleman and the enemy. The freed slave looks on with concern and confusion. Because of the emotional complexity and the poignant feelings evoked by this group, it was considered one of Rogers’ most successful works. Over 80,000 narrative sculptures were sold by the self-taught Rogers from his workshop in New York City to middle-class Americans looking to decorate their parlors with an engaging work of art. Memling created sensitive, quiet portraits of the growing merchant class of his time set within landscapes and cast in natural light. Here, Wiley blends Memling’s style with contemporary street culture in a way that elevates and immortalizes his modern sitter, a resident of Brooklyn, Rafton Glean (his name is painted on the doors of the frame). Wiley has explained, “I try to use the black body in my work to counter the absence of that body in museum spaces throughout the world.” In 2018, the artist was chosen by President Barack Obama to paint his official portrait (right), now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
