Essay with sale even mentions her. Article published by auction house says “a rare portrait by German artist Franz Kessler, executed in 1620, likely depicting German Princess Amalia von Sayn Wittgenstein.” Is MAG girl from that family too? Info from Isabel Herdle as per memo from Marie Via in file: this frame was on a work received with the George Eastman collection-- the wife of UR president Allen Valentine preferred a French style frame and had some of them reframed while they lived at Eastman House. She gave these original frames to MAG. The memo mentions specifically Eastman''s Hals and Rembrandt (68.98 and 68.101) which were reframed during Valentine''s tenure; this frame MAY have been on MAG''s Rembrandt originally. Isabel mentioned that this frame had to be cut down to fit the Kessler, and that it had hand-cut nails.", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/50.30_A1.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/50.30_A1.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/50.30_A1.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/50.30_A1.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "15965", "Image_Type" : "digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 5036, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/5036", "Disp_Access_No" : "1955.60", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "17th century", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1600", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1699", "Disp_Title" : "Tankard", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "German artist", "Sort_Artist" : "German artist", "Disp_Dimen" : "8 in. While many were original, others were legitimate copies used to replace broken originals or decorate new and renovated buildings in the medieval or Renaissance style. There was also a large market for modern forgeries made specifically to serve an ever-growing market of collectors. Of these three armorial panels [42.31, 42.34.3, 55.98], the only early example is the piece with the motto Bibe Si Sapis, which means “If thou art wise, drink.” The other two, both of which have women holding coats of arms, are modern, probably made in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
