In 1934, Arms demonstrated “The Making of an Etching” at one of his many appearances before the Print Club of Rochester. He is best known for his detailed etchings of Gothic and medieval architecture. In 1923, Arms began an ambitious project of drawing and etching the great cathedrals and churches of Europe. Limoges is one of his French Churches series featuring Saint-Étienne Cathedral, constructed between the 12th and 16th century. Fortunately, the quality of New York waterways is currently improving, and sights like the one may be more common in the future. Looming above the swimmers and boaters enjoying the East River is the Queensborough Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge, made famous by Simon and Garfunkel’s album and song (Feeling Groovy). One of the many bridges that have been artists’ favorites, the Queensborough Bridge connects Manhattan and Queens. Over a mile long, it was opened to traffic in 1909. The spires that were part of the original design, and that can be seen in this print, were removed in the 1950s because of their deteriorating condition. In East Side, Night, he emphasized the city’s hard metallic elements – the fire escape, the sturdy supports for the El, railings, cars, barrels – but tempered them with the softness of the lithographic crayon. Off and on during the Depression, Harold Faye found employment with the Graphic Division of the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. This government agency was set up as part of the New Deal to create jobs. Typically, artists submitted drawings to supervisors who would either approve them, in which case the artists would go ahead and print multiple copies, or the work would be disapproved and shelved or discarded. Nearly 4,000 artists were given work thanks to this program, including Jacob Lawrence, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock. [Label text, 2003]", "Dedication" : "Gift of Helen S. By 1931, when it was exhibited at MAG and acquired with funds donated by a relative of the Watson family, Hopper had become HOPPER; the Museum of Modern Art had purchased one of his paintings the year before. While MAG does not own any of his canvases, we are fortunate to own this print and one other from Hopper’s decade of printmaking, 1915–1924. The cinematic quality of Hopper’s paintings is evident even in his etchings. The artist gives us the sense that we are unseen watchers observing clandestine activity, and we have a feeling of unease. Also, in the juxtaposition of the human forms with the bridge’s monumental tower, the impact of its sheer mass is heightened. The Brooklyn Bridge opened on May 24, 1883, after thirteen tumultuous years of work to complete the plan originated by John Roebling. It fulfilled the prediction that he offered in his original proposal: "The contemplated work, when constructed in accordance with my design, will not only be the greatest bridge in existence, but it will be the great engineering work of the Continent and of the age. Its most conspicuous feature - the great towers - will serve as landmarks to the adjoining cities, and they will be entitled to be ranked as national monuments. As a great work of art, and a successful specimen of advanced bridge engineering, the structure will forever testify to the energy, enterprise, and wealth of that community which shall secure its erection." In particular, both artists shared a fascination with the landmarks and activity along London’s Thames River. This etchings was a part of Whistler’s A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames and Other Subjects (known as “The Thames Set”). He was the greatest artistic genius of his time and essentially changed the conception of printmaking in Germany. Dürer learned the techniques for engraving from his family of goldsmiths, but was later apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut, a well-known Nuremberg painter and maker of woodcuts. He was uniquely placed to learn and work in engraving, woodcut, and painting, although without his brilliance, these opportunities would have been unfulfilled.
