Self- taught as a printmaker, he specialized in woodcuts and wood engravings, but he also painted. His design for the logo of the Print Club of Rochester, which he helped found, remains in use to this day. Color wood engraving is a relief technique. A design is cut with sharp wood gouges on end-grain wood. The raised uncut surface is inked with a brayer. Paper is laid on it and the ink is transferred by burnishing with a hard surfaced tool, such as a baren or spoon. Multiple blocks are created for each separate color. In order to economize, some colors are intentionally printed together to create a third color. Excerpted from installation text, Aug. 2011 Colleen Piccone, Curatorial Dept. In 1920, the artist would only have been 17 and was not yet a student at the Mechanics'' Institute; however, in 1929 he was included in a MAG exhibition and would have been known as a printmaker. Note the mention of these prints and blocks as recent acquisitions in the MAG Bulletin for 1929. It seems likely that at some point during cataloguing, the pieces were inadvertently given 1920 accession numbers. The actor is identified as Iwai by his <em>mitsudomoe</em> crest, with its pattern of three commas in a circle, on his cloak; another, perhaps his <em>kaemon</em>, or "alternate crest," is on his sleeve. As in his print of the actor Nakamura Noshio I (97.105), the subtlety of Shunkô's technique is seen in the restrained use of color, the complexity of the pattern in the actor's yellow outer cloak, and in the soft appearance of dappled grey material against the geometric design on the door. Fuji appears in the distance behind the title cartouche on the left, and a roof of the popular Sensôji temple juts up just to the right at the far end of the bridge. Although perhaps more decorative than the work of many of his Expressionist contemporaries, his woodcut "Girl" of 1922 shares much in common, including a favored medium and subject matter. When examined closely, the innocuous theme of a seated nude female takes on a much darker quality through her expression, the placement of her hand, wilting leaves, the strangeness of the dog at her side, and the bird hovering above her head. He quickly became one of the most influential and prolific printmakers in post-war Japan. He subscribed to the creative print movement’s philosophy that art is self-expression, and should be the work of a single creator. By the late 1950s, his work was largely abstract. In this print, Hagiwara employed one of his trademark innovative techniques. He first printed the back of the sheet from an inked piece of plywood. By applying pressure to the front of the sheet, he literally pulled the color through the paper, creating a soft patina. Remaining colors and lines were then printed from additional blocks in the traditional way, on the front surface of the sheet. [Label text, 2014]", "Dedication" : "Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. This print is part of a series of Ryoan-Ji, a Zen temple built in Kyoto in 1473, which was famous for its dry garden consisting of 15 rocks arranged on a bed of raked, white gravel. Here, Saito has broken the composition into a series of horizontal bands and circles that, without the title and context, seem abstract. Of particular beauty is his use of the grain of the woodblock to create a variety of textures, all of which visually refer to the materials they represent. The vertical band at the left of the print is surely part of the temple’s wooden building, while the white horizontal band at center depicts the gravel bed on which the rocks are presented. He was primarily a painter until his late 40s, when he became fascinated with woodblock printing. Although his subject matter—as here, temples, landscapes, and cherry blossoms—was often reliant on that of the earlier ukiyo-e, or “floating world,” print, Yoshida departed from tradition in his working technique. Unlike ukiyo-e artists, who followed the customary strict division of labor between designer, carver and printer, Yoshida was closely involved in all parts of the printmaking process, including the design of the key blocks, choice of colors and supervision of the printmakers. Occasionally, he carved the printing blocks himself. Yoshida traveled throughout the world and was an avid mountain climber. These interests are reflected in the subject matter of his prints, which include images of alpine scenes, the Sphinx, the Taj Mahal and Mount Rainier. His work was extremely popular with Western collectors; he was one of the only shin-hanga artists to sign and title his prints in English. Note the mention of these prints and blocks as recent acquisitions in the MAG Bulletin for 1929. It seems likely that at some point during cataloguing, the pieces were inadvertently given 1920 accession numbers. It has been decided to retain the 1920 numbers. --Kerry Schauber, Curatorial Research Assistant, July 2010", "Images": [ ] },{ "embark_ID" : 9842, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/9842", "Disp_Access_No" : "1920.47.3", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "by 1920", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1920", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1920", "Disp_Title" : "Process print for "Via Air Mail"", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Norman Kent", "Sort_Artist" : "Kent, Norman", "Disp_Dimen" : "6 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.
