In a 1981 interview, Davis recalled the motivation behind his work of the period: Well, in the climate of 1957, ’58, Abstract Expressionism and painterly abstraction were dominating everything. All the art departments—college art departments—were grinding out little De Koonings and Pollocks and Klines and so on. So, in that climate, it seemed like Abstract Expressionism was academic, and there was no place to go….So the very opposite place to go, obviously, was to get away from painterliness and be neat….So I just…decided to do a stripe painting, just to be outrageous….I was just one of a number of people that were beginning to feel…this painterly abstraction was used up and we had to move somewhere else…. Fishwife, by Syracuse artist Paul S. Berry, is an example of such an acquisition made from the 1952 show. Its survival may rest on the fact that it entered the museum’s collection so soon after it was painted, as every August the artist would evaluate the contents of his studio and destroy anything that wasn’t up to his exacting standards. According to Berry’s widow, Fishwife is painted in a style quite different from most of his work. A turbaned Haitian woman lifts an enormous, wide-eyed fish from a wicker basket; the diagonal line of her muscular arm echoes the ramshackle roofline of the building behind her. The influence of photography is seen in the arm of a third person poking in from the left side of the composition. In lines that follow the numbers of a magic square in their natural order (1, 2, 3…), Trautmann observed orbital patterns replicating natural forms. On March 4, 1912 Bragdon wrote in his diary, “Trautmann [has] discovered the spiral law of space.” From this, Trautmann developed his Principal of the Orbit, a philosophical explanation for creation, evolution, and existence: “I am borne spinning along in the great whirlpool of evolution. It is because I am a child of nature that I am able to conceive only spinning and spiraling things – whirling worlds, universes of nebulae, stars, planets, satellites; universes of molecules, atoms, electrons, protons; universes of embryos, nuclei, chromosomes, genes. By reflection I rotate; my universe turns because I myself turn…my sphere of activity assumes an orbital motion because I am the spinning center of it.” [Gallery label text, 2010]", "Dedication" : "Bequest of Fannie Benjamin", "Copyright_Type" : "Copyright Assigned to MAG", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "Painting", "Creation_Place2" : "United States", "Department" : "", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/60.55_A1.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/60.55_A1.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/60.55_A1.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/60.55_A1.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "33353", "Image_Type" : "digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/60.55_R1.tif", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/60.55_R1.tif", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/60.55_R1.tif", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/60.55_R1.tif", "IsPrimary" : "0", "_SurrogateID" : "37901", "Image_Type" : "digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "Photo of Fritz Trautmann in front of this painting. Although commercial pattterns became available in the late 1860s, earlier designs were the product of the maker’s own imagination and circumstances. The rugs were typically crafted by women, often using worn scraps of material and homemade dyes, who sometimes copied examples made by friends and neighbors. We can imagine that the person who designed this particular rug was a farmer’s wife, proud of her livestock and the variety of flowers she grew in her garden. The fact that some of the medallions have lost their edges suggest that it has been cut down from its original size due to wear.
