Thaulow spent much time painting in France. This scene probably represents Manéhouville, a village on the Schie River near Dieppe in Normandy. A friend of many of the Impressionists, although he did not experiment with colors of light as they did, Thaulow convinced Claude Monet to visit Norway one winter to paint the snow.
