Jane Freilicher came of age when contemporaries like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning were painting in the often gestural and painterly style of Abstract Expressionism. Freilicher remained loyal to representational subjects and the time-honored traditions of landscape and still-life painting. Characteristically, View Over Mecox depicts the view of an inlet near her studio in Water Mill, Long Island.
Vivid colors and fluid brushwork link Freilicher with Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann, with whom she studied and whose work is on view nearby.
