Bellows taught at the Art Students League in New York City, where Peggy Bacon and many other artists studied with him. In this print, Bacon includes her own self-portrait immediately to the right of the easel. Bacon and Bellows both lived in Woodstock in the 1920s, where Bacon and her husband, Alexander Brook, published the satirical weekly The Woodstock Hue and Cry in 1923.
