In this image, Kollwitz depicts a private moment of a single woman. The figure's illuminated face and hands stand out from her dark surroundings. Seemingly unaware of the viewer's presence, this solitary figure conveys a sense of dignity and burden.
Oversized, roughened hands are a common feature of Kollwitz' figures. By highlighting her large capable hands, Kollwitz reminds the viewer of this laborer's toil.
